It’s an exciting career yet also a daunting one for some. Maybe you dream of the financial freedom when you become a writer or the ability to work more flexible hours or perhaps you’re after the sense of achievement that can be felt from seeing your own work published, either on the internet or in physical print. It doesn’t matter why you want to become a writer the fact is that it’s quite easy to accomplish if you know how to go about it in the right fashion.
So what can you when you become a writer?
When you are a jobbing writer you can be writing anything from your own material that’s either self-published or traditionally published, ghost writing content for others in the form of book, ebooks and articles to writing sales copy, or copywriting, to help companies sell more of their products. Some people write because they have a passion, others write because they simply want to be a bestselling author and others write to earn a living. If you become a writer for this purpose it can mean writing for others and as mentioned before come in the form of writing blog posts and articles for publication on the web.
Whatever your reasons are for wanting to become a writer, you need to identify your goals early on so you can focus on the model that suits you best. This way you won’t be torn between, say, writing a novel for a self-publishing project and writing twenty blog posts for a client. You’ll be much more focused and you’ll achieve a lot more in terms of income from your endeavour. Some of the things you’ll need as a writer include a pad of paper, a pen, a computer (or laptop) and an internet connection. That’s literally it. You may need access to a coffee shop from time to time or maybe everyday but I’ll leave that choice up to you.
For the rest of this article I’ll assume you want to become a writer that writes content for others as this website focuses on giving advice in this area. More commonly known as a ghost writer, you can earn anywhere from $100-$250 per day with a little experience. To get started you’ll need a strong desire to succeed along with the will to follow it through. Once you’ve got that you’ll need a few article samples and maybe a few sample chapters that you can show to potential clients so they can see your work before they hire you. As soon as you’ve got these to hand you can then start seeking work but don’t worry, once you’ve got some experience under your belt clients will start coming to you.
